International Journal of Inactivism — Mindless Link Propagation section

The ‘policy think-tank’ known as the Heartland Institute is mindlessly propagating an article on The Register by Andrew Orlowski insinuating that the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) in East Anglia is refusing to disclose the raw data for its temperature records for dubious reasons. [cached] The article says,

Professor Phil Jones, the activist-scientist who maintains the data set, has cited various reasons for refusing to release the raw data. Most famously, Jones told an Australian climate scientist in 2004:

Even if WMO agrees, I will still not pass on the data. We have 25 or so years invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it.

    A response at reddit: [cached]

Most famously, Jones told an Australian climate scientist in 2004:

If it’s famous, how come I can find no mention of it other than blog-rant rehashes of the Register article?

Maybe Mr. Orlowski misplaced the original data?

EDIT: The raw data has been released:

McIntyre obtained raw data when it was accidentally left on an FTP server last month.

So if Orlowski and his buddies were really interested in examining the data and finding faults with it, he could just get it from McIntyre, could he not?

One possible conclusion is that the Orlowskians are not really interested in the data – so what are they really after?
